Kevin, the chef de cuisine at Yardbird, and Carina, an artist and operations manager for Anthropologie, have exactly the kind of home, lives, and passion that you'd dream about finding in such a creative couple. Darling Juliet painted the most honestly beautiful portrait of their relationship with this session, capturing a time of day - breakfast - that has been a central theme throughout their relationship, all the way back to the first time they met!
The two met in Portland, Maine - Carina was an art student and barista at a coffee shop, and Kevin was a cook working two jobs. He would stop by the coffee shop on the way to and from his morning job, and they'd exchange hellos and smiles over his "double tall no water chai". One morning, she messed up that chai, and he took the opportunity to ask her to breakfast; it didn't take long for him to win her heart: "After a delicious meal we went to our local used CD store to see what we could find. We both ended up buying albums from the same artist, Saves The Day. We drove around in the car singing at the top of our lungs as if we'd known each other for years or were that perfect person next to you at a concert that knows all the words, too."
After graduation, Carina moved back to Miami, and Kevin followed: "Four years, two Subarus, many adventures and a small rescue pup later Kevin's family invited me to their reunion in Long Island, New York. We flew into La Guardia and Kevin surprised me with a day in Manhattan. He had planned for us to spend the whole day at MOMA and made reservations at the Modern after meeting the chef at Yardbird a few weeks back. After an amazing day in a city I'd always wanted to visit, spending a day surrounded by my favorite artists and for the first time seeing paintings that were so pivotal in my college thesis the museum began to close and it was time for dinner. There, next to the beautiful glass windows, overlooking the MOMA's sculpture garden Kevin proposed. It was all so completely perfect."
The two have filled their home with meaningful, beautiful, intimate things, like this blue piece: "The photograph of the blue painting is a piece Kevin and I are constantly working on. We have had it for 4 years, and make marks on it when something happens in our lives that we want to remember. On the painting you'll find moments like when we got our first apartment together, when we built our first desk, when we bought our first car together and when he proposed. It has traveled with us to 3 different homes, always by the front door as a constantly changing and evolving story of who we are, the moments we have shared and our love for each other."
Kevin designed Carina's stunning ring himself, and had it made at Dejan Studio Jewelry in Virginia. It's actually three rose gold rings, both raw and polished, cast into one; the number 3 is prominent in all of Carina's artwork, representing "horizon lines: gravel to sand, sand to ocean and ocean to sky" and influenced by her time spent on Miami Beach. There are four raw diamonds, an aquamarine (Kevin's birthstone and Carina's favorite color), a red jasper (the name of their pup), two medium sized diamonds on the ends (which belonged to Kevin's) grandmother, and finally, the center stone, which is the diamond he chose for Carina.
Carina fell in love with Kevin's laughter and tremendous heart; he fell for her smile and "love for every moment life brings". Says Carina, "We are spontaneous, passionate and madly in love with what we do, and each other. We are a balance to each others lives. It takes a very special person to love an artist and same goes for anyone who marries a chef. Our passions are very demanding which allows us to play and love even more intensely when we are together."
“It was like I knew him already, his family, his life, his stories, it was like I had found the best parts of all of my friends in one person. It was the most natural thing I'd ever done – to fall in love with Kevin.”
The two will be wed in October, and Carina's anticipation and happiness is infectious: "I couldn't be more excited to have found someone who shares my love for the beauty in each day. Someone who loves, smiles and laughs just as much as I do. Kevin is the best man I have ever met. We share a love for adventures and we are so excited to have found someone to share all of our adventures with together. We are so blessed, so happy and so grateful to have found each other."
