This has got to be the most stylish green wedding I've had the pleasure of viewing. Bentley and Brian focused on sustainability, starting with plantable save-the-dates, selecting mahi as the best option for local fish, and finishing with ribbon wands made of recycled materials. Our newest Fave, Leslie Hollingsworth Photography, made sure not to miss a single moment so you can soak up all the goodness, too!
Bentley and Brian met in San Francisco during an alumni weekend for the International Space University. One of the founders of the school was also the co-founder of the graduate studies program at Singularity University, where Bentley was studying. The co-hosted event was the beginning of a long-distance relationship that lasted almost two years before Bentley moved to Hermosa Beach to be closer to Brian. Not long after, he received a promotion that would move them to Washington, D.C.
Before their cross-country move, Brian wanted to create a final and lasting memory of their beloved beach town. He reserved an ocean view suite and made plans to watch the sunset with his soon-to-be bride. Bentley noticed a rose petal heart in the sand and recalls thinking, "That's romantic. What a nice way to watch the sunset." Just a few more steps and she noticed another smaller heart outlining a tiny box. Before she knew it, Brian was on one knee proposing marriage. He had enlisted a few friends to take photos (and keep an eye on the ring box!) that were watching from a nearby lifeguard stand. So, not only does Brian get brownie points for proposing so romantically, but he also captured their last memory on that beach. Love it!
Picking a location for their wedding became a blend of childhood memories and grown-up lifestyles. As Bentley tells us, Brian lived in Hermosa Beach for eight years and fully embraced the relaxed SoCal, surfer lifestyle. I frequently vacationed in Miami and the 30-A area with my family and always felt most at home near the water. The wedding style was a combination of our favorite beaches: chic and contemporary South Beach; fun and relaxed SoCal; classic and beautiful Rosemary. Christina Gillon Events along with Myrtie Blue blended the elements perfectly to create our dream wedding.
Leslie noted that our first dance was one of "the sweetest ever" because we sang our song, "Lucky" to each other. What she didn't know was that during the first year of our long-distance relationship we would sing that song together on the way to the airport every weekend.
I love the palette of black and white with grey and turquoise accents. It's so chic! Their modern lounge area of white couches and ghost chairs was complete with sequin pillows and guests enjoyed gluten-free bites with southern flair like grits and fried green tomatoes. Dine by Design used only recycled or reusable dinner-ware and provided pitchers of cool water rather than dozens of water bottles.
Laura, Becca and I drove through Alys Beach last summer and all agreed that it is a unique spot for weddings. The mini-town is nestled right along 30-A and stands out with its contemporary white walls and perfectly manicured lawns... and a picturesque beach, of course!
Bentley and Brian truly poured themselves into their wedding, right down to the "gift registry". Says Bentley, We had the pleasure of meeting the founders of Water Wells for Africa while we were living in Hermosa Beach and immediately connected with their mission to provide sustainable water sources in rural African communities. We wanted to honor the start of our new life together by sponsoring a 'Wedding Well' and encouraged donations to this charity in lieu of gifts. We've committed to raising enough money for the installation of an entire well by our first wedding anniversary. We are both very passionate about sustainability and helping those in need, so this was a fitting first goal for us to set as a couple.
Congratulations, Bentley and Brian! Thank you so much for sharing the story behind your fabulous wedding day. And a special thanks to Leslie for capturing such lovely images!
