Inspiration: Modern Preppy Plaid

on by in Weddings & Such

Living in Palm Beach County, it's near impossible to miss the beautiful, rolling golf courses that entertain families on sunny days. Many clubhouses enjoy hosting weddings for their members including Palm Beach Gardens' Ironhorse Country Club. A request was made for Laura and I to bring a traditional location to life with a mix of modern and chic elements. The result? A Modern Preppy Plaid inspired wedding fit for the queen of Scots...

We began using our ever handy-dandy Pinterest board to gather images of emerald green (color of the year!), classic navy, and all things preppy and plaid. We wanted to focus on the golf idea: finding a way to make traditional elements feel fresh and bringing the outside course in. Among our inspirations were Scottish tartans, vintage par 4 images, billowy modern draping, and unexpected pops of prep. The outcome is so fresh and fun! See for yourself...

Thompson Photography Group joined in to capture all of the details we put together and our adorable "Adie & Fin" are a real-life married couple, Courtney & Francis of the Finnerty clan. We dolled our bride up in a Justin Alexander gown from Bacio Bacio Bridal Salon and added our own emerald green cardigan for a preppy twist (the dress comes with a stunning lace bolero that you'll see later!). Her look was breezy with a sweet up-do and luminous makeup by Kiss This Makeup.

Gorgeous bells of Ireland, green trick carnations, thistles and ivy were incorporated into the floral design by Bobby Kyser of Panache Style. His creativity shined and definitely gave us an update on some old classics like we were hoping. Laura and I wanted to see ivy in a modern wedding design for a while and we knew a whimsical garland for the ceremony backdrop would work nicely here. Bobby thoughtfully added some to our bride's bouquet and we love how it pops against her cardi!

Designing unique and stylish paper goods was on Laura's task list, while coordinating rental orders and vendors was on mine. She began her concepts with that fabulous navy and lime green plaid and drew inspiration from Scottish fare and golf flagsticks. What she came up with is close to genius, methinks: mini-golf flags as escort cards placed in a moss filled tray and a dinner menu properly positioned just under your knife and spoon. Complementary tented place cards and "Lad & Lassie" drink stirrers carry the theme through the whole table top. We found those lime green glass chargers and rope handled utensils at Atlas Party Rental. I totally love that the diamond crystal stemware almost looks plaid! And Bobby even added boxes of wheatgrass to the tablescape for that manicured lawn look. FORE!

When we first visited the country club, we saw this little room off to the side of the main ballroom and thought, What a perfect lounge space! Jackie Becker from Quest Drape felt the same way and brought all of the glamorous white draping you've been seeing. Her team created a serene oasis that overlooked the golf course and we included white mod furniture from Atlas, as well.

A navy blue tux, bow tie, and plaid vest was a must for our groom and the Tux Shop Palm Beach did not disappoint. Doesn't he look handsome relaxing next to his darling girl?

For some extra sweetness, Johnson's Custom Cakes baked golf ball cake-pops... adorable and delicious!

We're so happy to have been a part of this styled shoot. A special thanks to Tiffany Riordan of the Beacon Firm for including us and to Ironhorse Country Club and all of the talented South Florida vendors: it was a pleasure!
