As Floridians, we're doing our best to believe it's fall: breaking out the boots, carving pumpkins, and pretending to ignore that hurricane out there. (Go away, Sandy!) So we're thinking a deliciously spicy-sweet cocktail, with a smoky punch that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, would be perfectly welcome right now.
This is the type of drink that would make an excellent 'His' cocktail at an elegant autumn or winter wedding. A bit swanky, and definitely unusual, but not so girly that the boys won't want to have it in hand. The vivid orange hue and the hint of maple flavor are a perfect fit for the season!
(adapted from this recipe from Bourbon & Branch)
2 oz. white/silver rum (we used Mount Gay)
3/4 oz. lemon juice
1/2 oz. real maple syrup
1/8 tsp. smoked paprika
4 sage leaves
Bruise up 3 of the sage leaves to release their aroma and flavor, and put in a cocktail shaker. Add rum, lemon juice, maple syrup and paprika; fill the shaker with ice and shake well for 30 seconds. Stain into a glass (a lovely coupe is the perfect choice) and garnish with the remaining sage leaf.
Makes 1 drink
Enjoy! And happy, happy fall.
