When we saw these beautiful light filled photos from our Fave, Shea Christine, we got so stoked to share Ashley and Shelby's story. You'll appreciate the glimmers of fall and how they incorporated their travelust into these portraits, too. Plus, they chose an orange grove to show off their adoration for the (might we say, awesome) state they met and fell in love in.
Neither Shelby nor Ashley are native Floridians, but they both moved here around the same time to pursue their careers and graduate school. They met via an online dating site and were engaged almost exactly one year after they met!
“After spending just an hour with Shelby, I could tell he had the character of a man I wanted to share my life with.”
From Ashley: He knows me really well, so he obviously knows how much I love antique and vintage things. My mom is partially responsible for this since she collected antiques and I grew up listening to oldies music with her. The summer before we got engaged, I made a trip home to California and found a bunch of my mom's old 45 records, which I brought back to Florida with me. However, I didn't have a record player and for the next few months Shelby kept hearing me say over and over how I really wanted to get one so I could listen to my mom's records.
Shelby planned every tiny detail of our engagement so perfectly! On the night of November 26th, 2013 I went to visit him at his apartment and he surprised me with a vintage record player! I was thrilled! And then he said he had something else for me, too. He pulled a record out of the closet and said he had a custom mix tape record made for me. How cool, right?! As he proceeded to put the record on, he asked me to dance with him to the first song. "That's All" by Nat King Cole began playing and we danced together in his living room.
After about thirty seconds the record began to skip and I thought something must be wrong with the player or the record. Then I heard Shelby's voice come on the record! It wasn't a mix tape after all, instead he had recorded an incredibly sweet speech for me, which ended with him telling himself to assume the position. At that point he got down on one knee, smoothly pulled the ring out from under the coffee table, and asked me to marry him! Of course I agreed! He had the ring custom made, a replication of an antique ring I had fallen in love with at a jewelry shop in New York. I couldn't believe my eyes! The whole thing was pure perfection and I still feel giddy every time I tell the story.
Our engagement photos were taken at New River Groves in Davie. Since we met here in Florida, we wanted to find a unique way to incorporate that into our session. After a long time of searching for the right location, I stumbled upon this beautiful old orange grove and knew it was going to be perfect for us. What says "Florida" better than an orange grove?! We also both love to travel and have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit together. And because of my love for all things vintage, we chose to highlight our passion for traveling in some of our photos with a vintage map, suitcases, and paper airplanes.
The two are making it official next month in Homestead. We can't wait to see those images!
